Is Stress Your Friend? If Not, You Must Read This

I never post links to other articles, websites, pages, blogs, or images in the body of my blog posts. Why?

For one of my of my blog posts, I reviewed a book titled, The Shallows: What the Internet is Doing to Our Brains, by Nicholas Carr. (June 2: “What Do Boko Haram, the Internet, and Books Have in Common?”) The author makes a case, backed up by solid evidence, that the Internet is causing us to think less deeply (less concentration, contemplation, and reflection). Instead we are becoming more ADHD, he concludes, as we flit around from random samplings of small bits of information from many sources. Just one of his many suggested antidotes? Stop clicking on hyperlinks!

Before I started this blog, I had a starter blog that, it turned out, no one read, or even knew existed. (Live and learn.)  That blog was full of links. I linked to Wiki. I linked to unusual words. I linked to articles, websites, and other blogs. I linked for more information. I was a hyperlinking queen.  But now, having read The Shallows, and taken it to heart, I no longer post links.

Having said all that, today is an exception. One of my two lovely daughters sent me a link to a Ted talk. The title of the talk is, “How to Make Stress Your Friend,” by Kelly McGonigal. It has nearly six and ½  million views.  I think I can promise you, this Ted talk will change you. It will change how you view stress for the rest of your life, and it could help you live longer.
