Five Reasons Why We Love The Buddha & The Borderline

Five Reasons Why We Love The Buddha & The Borderline

This book by Kiera Van Gelder is a must-read if you’ve been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, if you think you should be diagnosed with BPD, if your friends or family have amateurishly diagnosed you with BPD, or if you just want to understand approximately 20% of the population.*  Kiera: Thanks so much for sharing your story with us. Here’s why we love your book:

1)      The title is perfect alliteration and juxtapositioning.

2)      It’s a complete instruction manual on BPD.

3)      Spoiler alert: She gets better.

4)      She has to go through hell first.

5)      You can learn from her hell.

This book is now required reading in my DBT group (a separate thanks to Marsha Linehan, the founder of DBT, will come later). Thanks to my client who will remain nameless, for finding it and recognizing the heart, inspiration, and triumph contained within it.

*OK, I exaggerated that. It’s 20% of the population that has some sort of diagnosable mental disorder in any given year—and that’s from the National Institute of Mental Health. But still, understanding BPDs will go a long way toward helping you understand all the other crazy people in the world – and I use that term with affection and love–being a former crazy person myself.
