Is Someone You Love an Alcoholic? Then “Flight” is Must See Movie Therapy

When I first heard the premise behind Flight: that alcoholic pilot Whip Whitaker, played by Denzel Washington lands a commercial plane in a bad storm and saves most of those on board, I was afraid to see it.

Seeing first hand in therapy the tragic loss of family, relationships, careers, and peace of mind that alcoholics suffer from, I couldn’t stand the thought that this movie might somehow be glorifying alcoholism.

But my girlfriend and favorite movie critic Donna assured me that wasn’t the case. So I gave it a try.

She was right. The movie is incredible, edge of the seat drama, and Denzel Washington is awesome. Not only does it not glorify alcoholism, it shows one of the best portrayals of a high functioning alcoholic (HFA) that I’ve ever seen on film. The HFA works, even excels at his work, but at the expense of many other areas of his life. And the dirty little secret about HFAs is that they will reach the same point in their lives as your more typical drunkard; it just takes longer.

A great story, a great education on HFAs, and a great moral in the end. All that equals great movie therapy.

By the way, film critic Rob Lowman (LA Daily News), in reviewing Flight, calls Denzel Washington “one of the best actors of his generation.” Flight, now on DVD.
